is something distinct about the natural pine smoke aroma that has been traditionally imbued into the dry leaves of the Masu smoked Lapsang Souchong. This key feature is the house of a specific pine tree varietal (horsetail pine) that is heavily regulated and utterly unavailable outside the Tongmuguan Nature Reserve. Since the Zhang family have been living in these mountains and making tea for generations, they know where these trees grow in number and respectfully harvest only what they need for production season. That said, when compared to other smoked teas, this Masu Tongmuguan Smoked Lapsang is in its own world.

Cutting through the very savory pine smoke aroma of the leaves there is a carmelized sweetness that thickens the aroma and binds the many layers together. The brew is surprisingly light, a clear gold, and while the aroma is similar to that commming off the leaves, the brew itself is incredibly soft and sweet. This is another sign of the properly made Smoked Lapsang Souchong teas, the smoke should be all in the nose, while there should be sweetness on the tongue. Throughout the experence, complex spice and sweetness opens up similar to that of the Unsmoked tea, yet the smoke aroma never dissipates or lessons from he leaves or the brew. This tea is incredibly easy to drink and reminds us that the smoked process, when done properly, can enhance and blend with the flavors already present in the leaves.

As is characteristic of the Masu Village black teas, the leaves are large and rough. This aroma is thick with spices redolent of mulled wine and, of course, blooming flowers. The liquor is pleasantly thick on the tongue with a good deal of minerality. While the tea starts off very strong, there is a softer sweetness that builds with each infusion to match the guihua fragrance. This tea has a lot of endurance and our favorite part of the session is actually the second half, when the flavors become more melded and subtle, this is certainly a tea that will age well!

For brewing, we recommend brewing with less than boiling water, but still sticking to flash infusions in a small gaiwan or teapot. One big secret of this tea is its taste when Iced! So be sure to experience the with cold brewing this tea as well!

We first had this tea a few years back in spring of 2019, and have drank through several kg of it ourselves, gifted it to friends locally, but have never sold any internationally. The main reason for this is that we haven’t been to the farm where it is grown, we haven’t verified its origin. The producer claims it to be Ye Sheng, or Wild Harvested, which if you know anything about the modern tea market, is quite a claim. We were planning on visiting the farm in Fall of 2021, but due to a Delta outbreak, travel in Fujian is restricted. We went ahead with a small order to share this tea abroad, as it is one of our favorites, hopefully we can get out to the farm soon to verify the origin area and the wild harvest. Until then, rest assured that the textures and flavors of this tea surmount any claims it could make, be it truly wild, tongmuguan, or not, this tea is just a joy.

One River Like Lichuanhong, it is an offshoot of the traditional Yihong red tea that used to be processed and exported in Hubei's one time hub of tea export, Yidu. This tea is named "Old Path" Yihong in reference to the red tea that used to be grown in the mountainous areas of Hefeng and Wufeng Counties and then carried by back for final processing in Yidu.

Unlike the "Yihong" that was being made for export as late as the 1980's, this red tea is whole leaf, machine kneaded, and is left to oxidize in a pile for significangtly less time. It is also made from a late Spring rather than Summer pick, meaning there are just enough tender leaves to ensure that kneading can fully breakdown leaf structure and the moisture there within, but also mature enough that the tea delivers its uniquely rich rich and deep mouthfeel that is lacking in many Chinese red teas today.

Click below to learn more no one is hiking through a sacred mountain with a machete in hand seeking these trees out, they are older groves of the local heirloom tea varietal that have been left alone enough to grow their northwest of the Wuyi Mountains, it is one of the very few Qingming, meaning very early picking, bud-heavy red teas that have developed in recent years. While we source a lot of teas from the Masu Village in Tongmuguan, the Jinjunmei remains outside of our price range, easily asking wholesale prices over a thousand dollars per pound. This Jinjunmei on the other hand falls right into the sweet spot pricewise, why is that? Because it is a copycat version from Sichuan.

Sichuan is making a name for itself in the Chinese tea world for making excellent versions of tea from all across China. This same factory makes a Dragon Well Green Tea, Anji Baicha, Biluo Chun, and of course this Jinjunmei. While none of these teas are originally from Sichuan, with the advancement of processing technologies, the ability to clone and graft tea bushes, the very accessible state of information these days, the teas that are made in Sichuan are hard to distinguish from the genuine article.

This tea is made of exclusively small buds which turn from silver to orange as they oxidize into red tea. The smell of the leaves when placed in a warmed brewing vessel is sweet, chocolaty, savory, and rich. We get ample notes of honey, yeast, and baked yams. When infused with water, the savory nature of this tea is emphasized, while it is less sweet and more dry than the Wild Black, it is still a gentle red tea with very little astringency.

The brew itself is a rich red with a lot of mineral notes on the tongue and a full bodied dry mouthfeel reminiscent of a fine dry red wine. There are no sour or fruity notes with this tea, what little sweetness there is takes the form of rock sugar or caramelized honey. This tea provides a consistent few brews of tea reminding us of silver needle on the other side of the oxidization spectrum, a mature tea that consistently delivers an excellent brew with very little fuss or deviations. At this price, it's a joy to experience such a finely crafted delicately plucked tea.

We prefer brewing this tea at lower long since coveted because of the name alone, in the Chinese the name is Feixi Xiao, or the Concubine's Smile. While this might seem like the tea is a reference to Yang Guifei, one of China's Four Great Beauties and most famous imperial concubine of the Tang dynasty, the reference is precise and is actually about the reason behind her smile: her love of lychee fruit. Thus the reference of this tea is primarily about the lychee fruit, but it does get brushed by the beauty of Yang Guifei's lips and is in turn a double reference.

We were utterly astonished by the delicate fragrance of flowers and fruit that emerge when the dry leaves are placed in a warm gaiwan. We smell honeysuckle, sweet fruit, and the subtle notes of gardenia flowers in a distant garden. Both will continue to mellow as they age.

Watch the video below for a glimpse into Dianhong production.

Tea: China Red Dianhong (中国红-滇红)
Type: Red Tea
Harvest: April 2026
Region: Yunnan Province, Fengqing County, Luodang Township.
Producer: Yang Family (Dianyuan Workshop)
Tasting Notes: Malt Chocolate, Floral, Raspberry, Stonefruit.

This is a rich, chocolatey, and floral red tea that showcases the modern direction in which local blended red teas have developed. Whereas more orange, down-heavy, yam aroma red teas have become the predominant form of Dianhong in the 21st Century, this tea is a different beast altogether. Its glossy, jet-black color and thin needle shape make it appear closer to Hubei Province's Lichuanhong than any other Yunnan tea. This tea has been made with a combination of heirloom qiaomu material and newer cultivars like Meizhan and Zijuan. Like more traditional Dianhong, this tea has been oven-baked rather than sun-dried.

"China Red" first began in 2007 as a project to create a new premium version of Dianhong. Researchers at the Fengqing State Factory had finalized a recipe of 18 different cultivars by 2010. Yet, in the decade and a half that has passed since then, small workshops like Dianyuan have also crafted their own versions, each with a secret recipe and wild bushstock endemic to that particular section of Fengqing County. This is the best version that we tried.

You can enjoy this tea either conventionally in a mug of your choice or Gongfu style. It is not a careful blend of multiple cultivars, nor has it undergone temperature-controlled piling and electric baking. This is a rougher, sun-dried tea made from a single cultivar. Like with raw puer, one is drinking this almost more for aroma, texture, and feeling than taste. There is a certain background astrigency which makes Gongfu-brewing most advisable when brewing this Shaihong.

With that in mind, one can enjoy all the pleasant dimensions that this rustic creation has to offer. The Qiaomu bushes that the Liu Family have access to in Baka Village offer sweet aromas and a woody body that are typical to sun-dred red teas in the Bingdao terroir area. While not as sweet as the Nuowu Shaihong in our sampler, this later pick from last year packs more of a punch. The vegetal edge has almost vanished in the last year of aging, and will continue to disappear with time. Over time, this tea will become darker and lose all astringency.

This is also a red tea that is caffeinating and energizing despite its lighter mouthfeel. You could easily have this in place of coffee or English Breakfast black tea in the morning, although adding milk would not be advisable.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0007/9681/9516/files/93_4e5615d7-ca0d-470c-8c57-a109e9bcccaf.png?v=1776959771
heirloom-hong-gongfu-red-sampler
Heirloom Hong: Gongfu Red Sampler

If you walked into a Fuzhou or Shanghai tea shop 100 years ago, you might have encountered red teas labeled as follows: Lapsang Souchong, Chingwo Congou, Panyang Conggou, and Keemun. All refer to some of the OG red teas that China developed for the international export market.

Initially, each of these teas was made from local, seed-grown varietals that are less aromatic or consistent in profile than many popular clonal varietals today. They were sometimes mellow, sometimes floral, sometimes woody, but never presented the sugary, yummy sweetness of some modern Dianhong or the perfumey, scent-forward body of Fujian red teas now made from Oolong cultivars.

There can be no doubt that any red tea produced today will likely be softer in flavor, gentler in roast, and cleaner in processing than whatever was being exported circa ~1920.
