The name of this varietal is a bit tricky to translate, as its a transliteration of the Chaozhou Dialect.  The meaning is a reference to the location of the mother tree for this varietal, obliquely referred to as being ‘behind the cave’.  As Aofuhou is a less common varietal, we decided to translate this name instead of keeping the pinyin (transliterated from the Chaozhouhua) intact.

By far the most heavily charcoal roasted dancong oolong we are carrying this year.  The Aofuhou is typically a more heavily roasted dancong oolong, though Master Wei went particularly heavy on the roast this year.  On the dry leaves is a rich toasty aroma with a strong backbone of sweetness common in the more fragrant varietals of dancong oolong, such as the Milanxiang.

The wet leaves give off a rich savory note of pine sap and mesquite wood.  This aroma deepens throughout the session as the leaves blend into the roast providing a nice dry tobacco and roasted peanut aroma.  As the roast is still fresh, this toasty taste dominates the first few infusions, though as this tea ages, the roast should subside into a sweet thick coating reminiscent of chocolate or vanilla.

The Hidden Cave, or Aofuhou, brews up a rich deep amber, and has a very thick mouthfeel.  There is a large amount of minerality on the tongue and a deepening huigan.  This is another tea we will save a small amount to sample every few months to see how the roast mellows and changes the tea with time.
