its delicate orchid fragrance.

We recommend brewing this tea in a gaiwan (2.5 grams to 100ml water with flash infusions) or in a tall glass grandpa style (3 grams to 8 oz Most anciently, the tea would be paired with fruits and other herbs. In Enshi, green tea was consumed this way widely until about 30 years ago. Rather than using personal cups or glasses, the jug could be passed around family and friends, with each person taking a sip. Brewing green, white, or puer tea in this way provides an entirely different flavor profile and experience.

In this combo, you can choose between either Maojian or Cuizhen. The former is made from more down-heavy cultivars like Echa #1 and the indigenous cultivar; the latter is made from Pingyangtezao and the Longjing #43 cultivars, giving it a greener shape. These cultivars also matured at different times, such the Cuizhen was made a few days earlier than the Maojian, but both were still picked well before the April 5th cut off. Both of these teas provide a sweetness and crispness expected from a tea of this season; Both of these teas will be the basis of further dividends to the farmers this coming July. It is beautiful with the down heavy early picked buds, its ornamental flowers, and perfect needle shape. The green tea used for this Jasmine Tea is the first pluck and entirely silvery buds. Often confused with white tea, this green tea is first produced very early in spring and is then sealed and stored in coolers for the Summer-blooming jasmine flowers to be ready for pairing.

Mixed artfully with jasmine flowers, the natural scenting process takes several days. First the green tea is spread out of clean muslin cloths and the freshly plucked jasmine flowers are laid right on top of the tea. In a temperature-controlled room with plenty of ventilation, the jasmine flowers naturally dry, imparting their fragrances to the green tea. These jasmine flowers are then discarded, as the historic precedent for jasmine tea is that one should charge only for the tea and not for the flowers. In the north of China, they like to drink their jasmine tea without any noticeable flowers, but the customers in the south (Guangzhou, Hongkong) prefer to see the flowers, so for the southern customers, the factory adds fresh dried jasmine flowers to their tea.

Naturally, the dominant fragrance in this tea is the jasmine flowers, which exude their aroma to all at the tea table every time the lid of the brewing vessel is lifted or the tea is poured. Beyond this is the body of the exquisite green tea, giving a milky, creamy flavor to the floral forward tea.

It is also still a jasmine tea. While not unpleasantly overpowering or sweet like some lower market jasmine teas, jasmine is the singular taste note that rings out throughout a glass of Bamboo Needle. It is also an unusual ORT product in that it is coming from the site of consumption rather than where it is produced. Gansu is the most inland tea-producing area, and the tea culture there is a variant of the tea jar culture that exists throughout some parts of inland China. Typically, this tea, locally called Chunjian (Spring Tips), is stored in open air piles fearless of the moisture that simply does not exist in the area's brutally arid climate. It is most commonly roasted and then boiled in tea jars alongside flowers, dried fruit, and rock sugar, but is sometimes enjoyed straight.

We recommend first experiencing this tea straight, jar-roasted and boiled or simply grandpa style. In flavor profile, it is closest to Chongqing Tuocha. It has a mild, neutral fragrance, a strong and lasting taste, a sharp but light mouthfeel, and a very refreshing finish. There is not a lot of complexity to be discovered through multiple infusions. This is a green tea for Puer drinkers and a curious but agreeable treat for green tea drinkers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0007/9681/9516/files/9_76704411-a703-42e0-ab84-0a2bfc10c1ba.png?v=1743495919
xinyang-maojian
Xinyang Maojian

Tea: Xinyang Maojian (信阳毛尖)

Harvest: April 12th 2025

Producer: Liang Family

Location: Liuling Village, Xinyang City

Flavor Notes: Cabbage, Celery, Fried Kale, Smoked Meat.

This is a model Maojian from a perfectly typical Xinyang producer. It has the strong, sweet, stable perfumed floral aroma that one would expect to find in a well made jasmine tea. It also has the cooling crispness of a green tea, that can be felt from the first to last infusion. It finally has the same delicate and creamy notes down-heavy cultivars in Fuding provide to early pick white teas.

Fuzhou is one of the original homes of jasmine tea. The Lvming factory does it a little different than how it is now done in Sichuan and other areas. As has been true for generations, the final product is visibly yellowed from the four rounds of piling & baking it has undergone over several weeks. In each round, workers stack, flip, and mix dry finished green tea with fresh jasmine flowers. The green tea had been picked and produced in Fuzhou using Fuding Dahao cultivar bushes, then shipped up to Fuding, especially Dianxia Township, in the Summer to be steamed, rolled, and sunned dry agauin by rural women who have been undertaking this work for decades. The jasmine fresh flowers are picked in Fuzhou in afternoons of July & August, when the temperatures are hottest and the greatest quantity of freshly opened flowers is available. For each round of piling/baking, fresh picked jasmine flowers most be procured. Unlike in other production regions, flowers from the last round of piling do not usually make into the bag with the final product here.

This tea can be enjoyed grandpa-style, cold brewed, or even in a Gaiwan as some do in Fuzhou and Beijing.

See our accompanying blog post here: Fuzhou Jasmine Tea - Introduction – One River Tea.

https://youtube.com/shorts/feature=share

This is a Presale product that will be sent out on April 5th.
