The first is the mother-bush cultivar Qidan Da Hong Pao, the second is the more commonly avilable mixed or Tiaopei style of Da Hong Pao (the category to which this tea belongs). The third is the less Like Lichuanhong, it is an offshoot of the traditional Yihong red tea that used to be processed and exported in Hubei's one time hub of tea export, Yidu. This tea is named "Old Path" Yihong in reference to the red tea that used to be grown in the mountainous areas of Hefeng and Wufeng Counties and then carried by back for final processing in Yidu.

Unlike the "Yihong" that was being made for export as late as the 1980's, this red tea is whole leaf, machine kneaded, and is left to oxidize in a pile for significangtly less time. It is also made from a late Spring rather than Summer pick, meaning there are just enough tender leaves to ensure that kneading can fully breakdown leaf structure and the moisture there within, but also mature enough that the tea delivers its uniquely rich rich and deep mouthfeel that is lacking in many Chinese red teas today.

Click below to learn more It is also an unusual ORT product in that it is coming from the site of consumption rather than where it is produced. Gansu is the most inland tea-producing area, and the tea culture there is a variant of the tea jar culture that exists throughout some parts of inland China. Typically, this tea, locally called Chunjian (Spring Tips), is stored in open air piles fearless of the moisture that simply does not exist in the area's brutally arid climate. It is most commonly roasted and then boiled in tea jars alongside flowers, dried fruit, and rock sugar, but is sometimes enjoyed straight.

We recommend first experiencing this tea straight, jar-roasted and boiled or simply grandpa style. In flavor profile, it is closest to Chongqing Tuocha. It has a mild, neutral fragrance, a strong and lasting taste, a sharp but light mouthfeel, and a very refreshing finish. There is not a lot of complexity to be discovered through multiple infusions. This is a green tea for Puer drinkers and a curious but agreeable treat for green tea drinkers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0007/9681/9516/files/9_76704411-a703-42e0-ab84-0a2bfc10c1ba.png?v=1743495919
bulang-arbor-white
Bulang Arbor White

Tea: Arbor White (大树/乔木白茶)
Producer: Yan Sandan
Date: 2024 White Tea
Location: Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Menghai County, Zhanglang Village
Tasting Notes: Berry, Peach, Floral, Cork.

There is a spectrum of Yunnan white tea between astringent cardboard and fruit salad. Processed as green tea, stems can sometimes give off rough astringency; as a red tea, they can come out weak, albeit sweet. Yet, as a yellow tea, stems offer up a uniquely rich, nutty, sweet, and roasty taste. The closest analog in the tea world is Japan's Hoji-kukicha, but the balance between sweetness and roastiness is unrivaled. It has the strong, sweet, stable perfumed floral aroma that one would expect to find in a well made jasmine tea. It also has the cooling crispness of a green tea, that can be felt from the first to last infusion. It finally has the same delicate and creamy notes down-heavy cultivars in Fuding provide to early pick white teas.

Fuzhou is one of the original homes of jasmine tea. The Lvming factory does it a little different than how it is now done in Sichuan and other areas. As has been true for generations, the final product is visibly yellowed from the four rounds of piling & baking it has undergone over several weeks. In each round, workers stack, flip, and mix dry finished green tea with fresh jasmine flowers. The green tea had been picked and produced in Fuzhou using Fuding Dahao cultivar bushes, then shipped up to Fuding, especially Dianxia Township, in the Summer to be steamed, rolled, and sunned dry agauin by rural women who have been undertaking this work for decades. The jasmine fresh flowers are picked in Fuzhou in afternoons of July & August, when the temperatures are hottest and the greatest quantity of freshly opened flowers is available. For each round of piling/baking, fresh picked jasmine flowers most be procured. Unlike in other production regions, flowers from the last round of piling do not usually make into the bag with the final product here.

This tea can be enjoyed grandpa-style, cold brewed, or even in a Gaiwan as some do in Fuzhou and Beijing.

See our accompanying blog post here: Fuzhou Jasmine Tea - Introduction – One River Tea.

https://youtube.com/shorts/feature=share

Tea: 2023 Huoshan Big Yellow (黄大茶)
Type: Yellow Tea, Orthodox Yellowing, Wet Fermentation
Harvest: May, 2023
Region: Dahuaping Town, Huoshan County, China
Producer: Huifeng Factory / Master Li
Tasting Notes: Earthy & Roasty, Chocolate, Coffee, Hazelnut, Red Bean Paste

This is yellow tea for Puer or Oolong drinkers. High temperature baked red teas were common in the 1990's, but have gradually fallen out of favor. With notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, and malt, this tea is not the normal yammy tea of the past decade nor is it the floral-fragrant red tea that is vogue now. Three days by foot to Hangzhou, Sanyang Township's Laozhupu Village continues to sell this robustly nutty but vegetal tea to the coastal metropolis that is Hangzhou, albeit almost always disguised as Dragon Well. It is not much to look at, but the tea's notes of toasted soy and celery make for a pleasant brew that has kept customers coming back from centuries.

10 Grams Mud House Dishuixiang

Perhaps the most exotic tea in the bunch, this is the exact rough but fragrant green tea made in the Daguyun core growing area that is shown in the video below. Its glossy, jet-black color and thin needle shape make it appear closer to Hubei Province's Lichuanhong than any other Yunnan tea. This tea has been made with a combination of heirloom qiaomu material and newer cultivars like Meizhan and Zijuan.
