years ago, we’ve finally done the walkabout and are ready to admit that other regions can do white just fine. \u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis beautiful spring white tea comes from Kuashan in Lincang and is some of the sweetest white tea we have tasted, hands down.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThis year, after tasting and pressing the Kuashan Raw Puer into the Hummingbird cake, we knew we were sold on the sweet leaves from this unknown region, and were keen on sampling the white tea versions.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eWe were not let down either when the next month we received a big sample bag of Kuashan white, in fact, after a few infusions we called the farmer and asked for 20kg.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThis has to be the most exciting ‘off-white’ tea we have had since we’ve been drinking tea, and it is just right up our taste-profile alley.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe green leaves of this white tea are large and wild, made of the Big Leaf Varietal common to Yunnan and picked from a mix of Old Arbor and Gushu Trees.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThe fragrance on the dry leaves is melon sweet reminding us of honeydew or cantaloupe.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eOnce infused, the leaves begin to give off the Yunnan White characteristic tannic fragrance that is redolent of malted barley and something akin to condensed cherries.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe marvelous part about this tea is how deeply imbued Village to check out their grove of Gushu trees (See the NYC Tapwater cake), we passed though the smaller village of Matai, or Horse Terrace.  Lanjie mentioned that this has some of the best white tea in Eastern Lincang and described the thick silver needle, the fuzzy buds, and the melon taste to the tea.  While we skipped pressing it last year in favor of the Kuashan Shoumei material (See the Forbidden Fruit cake), we were excited to get our hands on some of this excellent white tea this year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the leaves are so fuzzy, this tea takes some time to get going, delivering a few lightly colored sweet-water infusions before finding its true stride around the third infusion.   That said, the leaves on the first few infusions smell like walking through a fruit market in spring, there are melon fragrances mixed with mint and thyme, a little sweetgrass and cedar wood mixed in there.  Every time we open the lid of the gaiwan, we can't help but smell the leaves.  As the session progresses, the leaves begin to exude more cracked black pepper and thick rose fragrances.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe brew begins to thicken up, while remaining a clear pale gold.  After a few infusions, this tea begins to coat the mouth and leaves a pleasant oily sensation on the tongue.  The tea retains a lot of high notes in the mouth despite the heavier fragrances issuing from the cup.  After a few more infusions, we forget to count, we realize how long-lasting this tea is, providing brew after brew of clean golden infusions, it's very difficult to What we got from other households were heirloom cultivar leaves at a range of sizes too large to make our intended tea. We then decided to process the tea as if it were shoumei, using the trays and racks usually reserved for red tea production. After almost two weeks of slow browning, we arrived at the following tea. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith its heavy silver down, the local heirloom cultivar is well suited to be made as a white tea. Compared with Fuding brown shoumei, this tea is somewhat milder, yet still pleasantly sweet. It is a light tea that is good for a late night session, or as a substitute for a sugary drink at work. This is safely on the fruit salad end of the spectrum. A relatively young white tea from old trees (80~ years), this tea offers Puer sweetness and an elderly tree mouthfeel with almost zero sharpness. The closest parallel we have experienced is blueberryish Hainan brown shoumei, but this particular white tea has a more enduring fragrance, thicker soup, and a slightly cork\/barky edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBada Mountain, a bastion of Bulang and Hanni culture for thousands of years.  With a pristine natural environment, thickly rooted small tree; tall and towering Gushu, groves of sheltered Dashu, this mountain has some gently powerful tea. Coming from these Dashu, this white tea was produced by Bulang local Yan Sandan.
