The Juduozai or the Saw-Tooth Varietal is one of the three within the Almond Fragrance Cultivar (the others being the Peach Kernel Fragrance and Apricot Kernel Fragrance). The leaves of this tea are much more slender than the other roasted Dancongs we sampled this year, and the aroma is rich and buttery, redolent of a nicely toasted Yashixiang.
The roast is very apparent in the brews and creates a rich savory and umami sensation on the tongue.Unlike its cousin the Apricot Kernel Fragrance, this Almond Fragrance is very dry with little to no sweetness. In our minds, this tea perfectly embodies the ‘roasted Dancong’ style, it is clearly distinguishable from the more heavily roasted Wuyi Rock Teas, while still being pleasantly toasted like a very traditional Tieguanyin.
As this has been recently medium roasted (as of September 2021), allowing this tea to sit for a few more months will do wonders to help blend the roast in with the leaves. There exists on the edges of this tea a slight bitterness common to some Dancong Oolongs. Due to the depth of the roast there is also a lovely mineralogy that is left on the tongue and a deep huigan. . Check out other offerings from the Huiwei Community here.
