Tea: Baimudan (White Peony) Type: Fuding White Tea (Dahao cultivar) Harvest: Spring 2017 Region: Panxi Township, Fuding, Fujian Producer: Ling Family Tasting Notes: Honey Melon, Vanilla, Sweetgrass, Coconut, Goji berries, White Chocolate.
Like our original 2017 Baimudan from Yuanming Garden, this is a deliciously sweet aged Baimudan that is approaching the point of greatest sweetness and flavor it will achieve before dulling out. Fruity notes are intermingled with softer creamier notes of vanilla, coconut, or even white chocolate. Despite its advanced age, it is anything but a dry earthy twig. This tea remains at a transformative moment filled with honey cream and milky sweetnesses. The liquor is a clean yellow gold which can darken if steeped at length.
The Ling Family has been making tea for generations, transitioning from jasmine production to white tea production in the early 2000's like many Panxi locals in the core Huanggang Village. They store their white tea under wetter conditions than the Yuanming Garden Tea Factory, and rebaked this tea in 2021. An increased moisture content affects flavor in so far as boosting the fruity or chocolatey dimensions of the tea, with the disadvantage of some more tartness than a drier storage would provide. It is a unique white tea that deserves a place on your shelf.
Did not know what to expect, but the chocolatey, earthy, roasty taste is exceptional. Very mellow, smooth, and relaxing-feeling. A wonderful first dive into yellow tea for me.
This is absolutely one of my favorites. I’m about to order another batch so that I never run out. I’m very impressed with the depth of the flavor notes and the gentle hug from smokiness of it.
