I don't usually go for post-fermented tea like shou or heicha, but this caught my eye, I think because the leaves still seemed so green. I also didn't realize when ordering that the tea has a rather present smoked character, like pine or fir smoke. Resinous, but not overpowering or acrid. I'm not generally partial to smoked tea, I find it steamrolls the tea flavor, but this was very balanced. It actually kind of reminds me of Bamberg-style smoked lager. Light and sweet with a punchy backbone of vegetal bitterness and a smokiness that builds as you drink more.
The characteristic wet-pile fermentation smell was present, but subdued and only really up front upon taking a sip. For my palate at least, one person's "earthy" is my "tastes like compost". This definitely did not taste like that.
Like the description says, this tea really gets going with the astringency to sweetness sensation in the later steeps. For how light the liquor is the feeling is very mouth-filling. The initial steep is cloudy with trichomes, and later infusions become crystal clear.
This tea was a pleasant surprise and I will definitely order again. Excited to try more stuff from Mrs. Huang. The ball was 6 g exactly.
