Tea: 2023 Huoshan Big Yellow (黄大茶)
Type: Yellow Tea, Orthodox Yellowing, Wet Fermentation
Harvest: May, 2023
Region: Dahuaping Town, Huoshan County, China
Producer: Huifeng Factory / Master Li
Tasting Notes:  Earthy & Roasty, Chocolate, Coffee, Hazelnut, Red Bean Paste

This is yellow tea for Puer or Oolong drinkers. It is not light & bright like Lao Rao's Yellow Bud, nor is it a straight-forwardly orthodox yellow as in our Bogwood. It is a robust, full-flavor yellow tea that has become the most requested yellow tea in the crypt. This is a tea you should enjoy Gongfu style, in your favorite gaiwan or teapot. We encourage you to try shorter infusions so you can see how the interplay develops between more mineral or earthy notes and sometimes tart, roastier edges. This is a rinse you can and should drink.

Big Yellow has a unique flavor that has won a place in the hearts of a younger generation of tea drinkers, especially those in Northern China. While we were in Huoshan looking for Yellow Bud, we encountered a group of Shanxi tea merchants on the hunt for Big Yellow. There, like with yellow kukicha, Big Yellow has supposedly found a niche alongside Jasmine Green and other strong-scented teas that can make Southerners squirm. Master Li, who was once reticent to make any more Big Yellow, has always been interested in experimenting with pressed yellow tea, and has recommended this 2023 material.

This 2023 material is closer to the yellow kukicha in flavor profile than any of the Big Yellows we have carried before.

This is the first 100g full-sized yellow tea cake we know exists on the market, but we trust it will meet and exceed the expectations of those who have tried our smaller yellow tea coins from Huoshan and Yueyang. It is called "Golden Cock" in honor of the mountain and village most associated with Huoshan yellow tea.
