It has become a tradition when buying from Wen Zitong up on Wudong Mountain, to try and source some of the absolutely highest quality teas he has on offer. These are all single-tree productions from the oldest bushs in his garden. These are the oldest living ancestors of the modern tea cultivars they represent, and we are honored to carry what is so rarely available on the market for anyone to try.
These are single tree productions from Wen Zitong's Wudong Village garden. These teas are from two of Wen Zitong's mother bushes, the origin points of these two dancong cultivars in his garden. It was from these ancient trees that all his laocong (old bush) tea trees were cloned and grown. These teas are so difficult to buy, the only way we could access them was by being on the mountain when they were picked, having a close connection with the maker, and buying them in their maocha form (later paying Wen Zitong to sort and roast them for us). We visit Wen Zitong every spring and put in our mother-bush orders in person, spending days at a time up on the mountaintop to watch their picking and processing.
Rarely, if ever, have we had the opportunity to sample such exquisite teas, and these are clear examples of dancong oolongs unlike any other. While to the untrained palate there might not be a wealth of overpowering fragrances and flavors, we have found that these teas contain in their tea soup that sweet minerality only found in old trees, the brews are literally mouth-watering and keep us reaching for more infusions, additionally, for us, the chaqi or tea energy of these two mother bush producitons are unparalleled in our dancong experiences.
The set includes just 12 grams of the finest dancong oolong teas we have sourced this year, split into two 6 grams bags of 2 different Dancong Oolong cultivars, all properly charcoal roasted and individually packed in heat-sealed satchels.
